Headache Medications
There are over 100 different headache medications available on prescription. This is a listing of those that have been tested, and their indications. The Evidence-Based-Medicine movement of the 1980's and 1990's has tried to encouraged us to restrict prescribing to those medications that have passed the most stringent clinical tests i.e. have been through randomised controlled clinical trials or even meta-analysis of randomised controlled clinical trials.
However, in severe headache disorders, any medication that has been tested using randomised trials will usually have been used. This list is more about what can be used if all else fails, as often people with severe headaches are truly exasperated.

Lifestyle is Important in Severe Headache

Please remember that any headache disorder, especially migraine, will be helped by non-pharmacological treatments like sleep, hydration, exercise, regular meals, stress avoidance and use of biofeedback techniques.
