Tolfenamic Acid

Tolfenamic Acid (TA) has been tested in migraine, and is one of the few drugs tested for hangover headache in a scientific way.

Dr Kiavola and colleagues asked 30 volunteers to take TA 200mg prior to a bout of drinking, and another 200mg after finishing drinking but before retiring to bed.

On a separate occasion, the volunteers were given a dummy drug or placebo. The volunteers and the researchers did not know until after data were collected whether they had active drug or placebo (called double-blind testing).

The results showed a highly significant reduction in hangover headache when volunteers were taking active drug compared to when they too placebo.

There was also a positive effect on nausea, vomiting thirst and irritation.

TA is also a recommended treatment for an acute migraine attack, after positive results in a study of 141 people published in 1998.
